This paper presents validity evidence for a new multidimensional measure of adolescent readers’ ability to apply reading comprehension strategies necessary for understanding challenging academic texts. The Strategy Use Measure (SUM), developed in the context of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR), was designed with the intention of being pedagogically informative and culturally responsive to the increasingly multilingual student population across grades 4 through 8. The SUM was administered to 3,096 middle school students in Colorado. Using qualitative and Rasch analyses, special attention is given to usefulness for tailoring teacher reading instruction and appropriateness for Spanish speakers. The effects of cognate morphology for heritage Spanish speakers is described.
