Fri, April 13, 4:05 to 5:35pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 4

Abstract

In this study, I explore the impact of applying the Philosophy for Children Hawaii (p4cHI) approach to education and, in particular, teachers’ experiences in practicing it at Waikiki Elementary School in Hawaii. The participants are two experienced and two novice teachers involved in practicing p4cHI, as well as the principal from the Waikiki, and the philosopher in residence from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Data includes interview transcripts, email correspondence and personal memos. Software called Wordle is used to analyze the data. The analytic themes that emerged from the analysis of the data illustrate that p4cHI has successfully become a pedagogical model of teacher improvement, student cognitive, socio-emotional development and school betterment.
