MOOCs and Democratic Citizenship Education: On Ubuntu

Abstract

This paper focuses on the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Teaching for Change. In the main, we are concerned with initiating participants into a discourse of democratic citizenship education – that is, providing opportunities for students to engage democratically and concurrently show their willingness not only to articulate their rights in relation to human living, but also to confirm their responsibility towards humanity. The primary purpose of this investigation is to analyse the comments of students registered for the MOOC and ascertain as to how they respond to ‘encounters’ of democracy and citizenship education. We examine the implications of their democratic citizenship encounters for the African notion of Ubuntu.
