Pursuing Critical Perspectives

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 10:15am, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Second Floor, Beekman

Abstract

I am honoured that colleagues have chosen to discuss my work . From my 1982 book "A Sociology of Special education" I have tried to bring sociological and historical perspectives to bear on the social, political and economic policies and practices concerning special and inclusive education and the
education of lower attainers. This has culminated in my latest book "A Sociology of Special and Inclusive Education: Exploring the manufacture of inability" (Routledge January 2017).I am particularly concerned that within
the whole sector of education dealing with young people regarded as having learning difficulties, disabilities, low attainments, and/or behaviour problems, racial and ethnic minorities and poorer young people have always
been the main recipients. There continues to be a neglect of questions around what happens to young people after they have received a special, included or low attainment programme in terms of their life chances.
