The Postsecondary Education Choices of Black Rural Americans (U.S.)

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Trianon Ballroom

Abstract

The purpose of this project is to evaluate the postsecondary education choices of Black students from geographically rural areas within the United States. As much of the extant literature on Black education employs an urban filter to the extent that urban is often used synonymously with Black, the purpose of this project is to provide a description of the choices of Black students from rural areas using the National Center for Education Statistics’ (NCES) High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS: 09). This work will provide a foundational understanding of rural Black college choice, a platform for building the college dreams of rural Black students. Implications for research and practice will be shared.
