Fri, April 13, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Eighth Floor, Gallery 8

Abstract

In the present study, the relationship between parental involvement and mathematics performance was evaluated using a structural equation modeling approach. Data of student samples representative of grade 4 students from Western countries who participated in TIMSS 2015 were analysed.
A mediation analysis with structural equation modeling assessed the direct and indirect effects of the immigration status and socio-economic and cultural background on mathematics achievement through the mediation of parental involvement.
The results showed that all measures were significantly associated with mathematics achievement test. Furthermore, parental involvement, beliefs regarding education, beliefs regarding academic success and behaviors aiming at improving academic results partially mediated the effects of socio-economic and cultural status.
