The purpose of this study was to examine several non-traditional education programs offered in a large school district in South Carolina, U.S. Too often students are placed in non-traditional settings with little social and emotional-based services, self-reflection opportunities, or transitional plans (Settles & Orwick, 2003). This study analyzed three programs. Personnel interviews, observations, student surveys, student focus groups, and student dropout interviews were all utilized to answer research questions concerning program fidelity, challenges, successes, and dropout patterns. Research results indicate that successful non-traditional programs are ones that have small classrooms, caring staff, and adequate student services. The following factors led to students dropping out of alternative programs - student attendance, health issues, motivation, and program duration.
