Using results from the 2014 NAEP Technology and Engineering Literacy (TEL) assessment, this study examines whether 8th-grade students feel equally exposed to technology and engineering experiences in and outside of school, as well as the relationship between these experiences and student performance on the TEL assessment. We find that certain groups of students have less frequent experiences in technology and engineering and that most of these experiences are either positively or negatively associated with student TEL literacy, depending on the content area being examined, whether the experience is in school or outside of school, and which specific experience it is. These results are generalizable to the national level and have implications for efforts to increase student technology and engineering literacy.
