This study used a data-driven approach to investigate whether learner engagement in asynchronous online discussions (AOD) relates to student achievement. We also proposed a data model that described learner behavioral engagement in AOD at the individual and group level. In this regard, this study used fifty-six students’ log data collected from a wiki-enhanced undergraduate writing course that was designed to improve student participation in a collaborative writing community. This exploratory research demonstrated the proposed analytic methods could be used to visualize and analyze students’ behaviors in online collaborative learning. However, in spite of positive changes to building a well-connected learning community in the course over time, there was no significant association between the learner engagement in group interaction and performance.
