Abstract

This exploratory study aims to build learner profiles that explain individual students’ different levels of engagement in group interaction in a Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) environment. In this respect, this study proposed the six learner profiles that consist of popular figure, critic, facilitator, active participant, follower, and bystander. This study used the social network analysis method to model these six profiles, building upon fifty-six students’ interaction data collected from a wiki-enhanced undergraduate writing course. The following one-way repeated measures Multivariate Analysis of Variances (MANOVAs) and Analysis of Variances (ANOVAs) tests validated the existence of the learner profiles that were sufficiently different from one another. This study should help us to better understand students’ engagement in group interaction in CSCL environments.
