In order to better understand teachers’ perspectives on the design and development of digital game-based learning environments, this study examined the characteristics of digital learning games designed by teachers. Qualitative data were collected from 50 teachers’ Game Design Documents and their responses to reflection questions. Content analysis results showed that majority of the participants designed immersive game-based learning environments that require students to use real-world skills as well as content knowledge to complete missions or solve problems. The results also revealed that the game design and peer review activities helped them better understand the educational potential of game-based learning environments and develop a positive attitude toward learning through game design. Implications for educational game design and professional development are discussed.
