This qualitative study explores how a group of literacy coaches experienced a literacy coaching professional development during a yearlong implementation in a large southern school district. Additionally, we examine themes regarding change in overall coaching practices, the impact of literacy coaching on teacher growth, and the impact of literacy coaching on student achievement. Results indicate literacy coaching to have positive impact on teacher growth and change in practice. Stakeholders report the intentional use of instructional data changed the coaching conversations they were having with teachers. This shift afforded the coaches opportunities to more easily support their teachers in the key areas of balanced literacy. Implications for both research and practice of literacy coaching as professional development will be presented.
