45 Years Since Title IX: A Critical Feminist Review of the Literature

Abstract

Sex discrimination in educational contexts is an ongoing problem despite the passage of Title IX in 1972. This literature review provides a systematic analysis of peer-reviewed journal articles that examine Title IX and its impacts on addressing discrimination on the basis of sex in educational institutions. The authors identified and analyzed 70 articles using critical feminist and Queer Legal Theories. We found that many focused on athletics programs and few studies examined other elements of sex equity such as sexual harassment and assault and there was a complete absence of discussion of LGBT youth. This indicates much more scholarship is needed to understand how Title IX is being interpreted and applied in schools and institutions of higher education.
