Linking Scientific Reasoning and Nature of Scientific Inquiry Views: A Competence Model–Based Approach Involving Three Inquiry Methods

Tue, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Eighth Floor, Gallery 8

Abstract

The aim of this study consisted in applying one shared framework for describing, assessing and analyzing the structure of students’ scientific reasoning competences and NOSI views. Using three inquiry methods (observing, experimenting and modeling), we classified partial competences for scientific reasoning as well as for informed and naïve NOSI views. We assessed these constructs in a standardized setting involving 802 students. Structural equation models supported a ten-dimensional structure distinguishing between competences, informed and naïve NOSI views according to the three inquiry methods. The model showed positive latent correlations between informed views and scientific reasoning and negative correlations between naïve views and scientific reasoning. We discuss these findings with regard to the potential taking a differential perspective on reasoning and views.
