Fri, April 13, 4:05 to 5:35pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 3

Abstract

This presentation draws from a study about indigenous youth and the uncertain and challenging future they face, and how they can be supported to develop the necessary leadership abilities required to ensure cultural continuiety for their community. The study was designed to support and establish Māori youth to create sustainable conditions for indigenous community to thrive in the future. Knowledge about how young people might deal with indigenous aspirations in an era of scarcity and austerity is provided. The research also creates a space where Maori youth can engage in critical conversations about the promised opportunity of the future and draw support from their community and tribe.
