Wraparound Supports for Excellent Teachers

Mon, April 16, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Empire Ballroom East

Abstract

Wraparound supports are intended to provide an array of interconnected supports and services to those who need them. In schools, wraparound supports exist most often in the form of full-service and community schools, with a goal of serving students in high-poverty communities. In this paper, we argue for a framework of wraparound support for excellent teachers. Based on a study of instructional practices in three urban schools, we identified a group of excellent teachers who met the social-emotional and academic needs of their students. This paper explores the types of instructional, social, and organizational supports that these teachers received and those that they should receive in order to sustain them in the profession.
