The growth of immigration across the country means language students no longer need a plane ticket to experience authentic, immersive experiences. Community-based service learning (CBSL) has been burgeoning over the past two decades, but rigorous research into student outcomes is still emerging (Lear, 2012). This paper describes a mixed methods study that investigates undergraduate students’ perceptions of how they use Spanish volunteering with organizations serving the Latino community. Interviews and focus groups with students suggested CBSL increased linguistic self-confidence and provided exposure to language not commonly taught in coursework. Based on these findings, a pre/post survey will be administered Fall 2017 to ascertain if students’ perceptions of their language use and ability are correlated with CBSL participation.
