Moving Beyond Compliance and Reconceptualizing Instructional Design: A Context-Specific Framework for Online Course Reviews

Tue, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 4

Abstract

The study reports outcomes from an internal quality review of a sample online foundation courses in a MBA program at a large private research university based on two purposes: 1) evaluate online course quality to better ensure the overall alignment of online and onsite courses, and 2) develop course design processes that are collaborative and promote successful student learning outcomes. The study is based on a representation of the work of instructional designers as reflective and context-sensitive. While courses were found largely compliant with established standards in online course design (Quality Matters, 2014), the study offers a framework that moves beyond solely determining compliance and focuses more broadly on the relationships between programs, institutional contexts and online course quality.
