The Florida College and Career Readiness Initiative: Do Student- or School-Level Characteristics Predict Policy Success?

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Rendezvous Trianon

Abstract

The Florida College and Career Readiness Initiative is a statewide policy that required college readiness testing in grade 11 for students scoring in the midrange of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test in grade 10, and then participation in college readiness and success courses in grade 12 for students who did not test as “college-ready.” We looked for variation in the likelihood of both enrolling in and passing nondevelopmental math and English college courses across school-level variables that are expected to relate to the ease of policy implementation. We find variation in program impacts based on the school’s college-going rate, district size, test score range, grade in the state accountability system, and the percent of targeted students.
