Grounded on the newly developed framework of critical global literacy, this paper discusses a qualitative case study which was conducted in a U.S public school with three middle grade English language learners. It examined the issues of how the students from diverse ethnic backgrounds were engaged with language and literacy activities and how they became active agents when provided with the opportunities to empower themselves as globally oriented cultural resources. The findings challenge the preconceived notion that it may be daunting to implement critical literacy practices with ELLs due to their lack of English proficiency. The paper provides insights on how educators and researchers can promote ELLs’ global and multicultural perspectives and can empower ELLs through critical practices.
