Rotation evaluation forms are used widely in professions education programs to make decisions about learners. This study examines how qualitative narrative comments in rotation evaluation data can be synthesized with quantitative scores to track the longitudinal progress of trainees, from supervised (entry) to unsupervised (graduation) practice. Data from a longitudinal cohort of postgraduate trainees were used. Qualitative comments were coded for positive/negative feedback and quality/relevance; themes were identified. Findings showed consistency in information between quantitative scores and qualitative comments. Furthermore, qualitative comments provided information to enrich the interpretation of quantitative scores in making inferences about learners’ longitudinal developmental progress. Postgraduate programs in professions education may emphasize promoting qualitative comments to supplement and enhance the quality of feedback to learners.
