This paper reports on the structure of professional competence in the occupation of electronics technicians for automation technology. A theoretical model, which assumes that content knowledge and an analytical and constructive problem-solving competence as subdimensions of professional competence, was tested. To test this hypothesis we drew a sample of 211 electronics technicians for automation technology of the German dual apprenticeship track. The data were analyzed applying structural equation modelling (SEM) with confirmatory factor analysis, which confirmed the theoretical model of professional competence.
