This study focused on the impact of early misfit on the theta recovery of high proficiency examinees in multistage adaptive testing (MST). A three-stage multistage test was designed to allow free routing across the easy, medium, and hard modules. An alternative scoring and routing method was proposed to minimize the impact of early blunders. Simulations were conducted to examine simulee's theta recovery under various testing conditions. This study yield implications on how the design of MST could affect the recovery of theta from early misfit.
