Competencies for Instructional Design and Technology Professionals

Abstract

This study was conducted to identify competencies for instructional design and technology professionals. To do so, 393 job announcements were analyzed and 20 project managers were interviewed. Findings revealed that the most frequently cited competency was collaborate effectively with stakeholders, subject matter experts, and teammates. Skills related to analysis and design were mentioned more often than implementation and evaluation while experience authoring E-learning was the most frequently listed competency in the instructional technology category. Announcements for jobs in the higher education sector included more required competencies in instructional technology while those in business and industry, consulting, and healthcare included more required skills related to instructional design. Implications are provided for practitioners, employers, and academic programs.
