Evaluating an Online Makerspace Course Through the Critical Incident Technique

Fri, April 13, 2:15 to 3:45pm, The Parker, Floor: Second Floor, Lorica Room

Abstract

This presentation shares how the instructors of an online graduate class on makerspaces implemented VoiceThread to elicit critical reflections and conversations, seeking to replicate what would occur in a face-to-face makerspace course. The critical incident technique, first developed by Flanagan (1954) provides the theoretical framework for the study, and the session will provide examples of VoiceThread created by students and an in-depth discussion of the coding methodology used by the instructors. The session will conclude with an explanation of how these critical incidents informed subsequent offerings of the course.
