Modeling Collaborative Disciplinary Practices: Making Sense of Short Poems

Mon, April 16, 10:35am to 12:05pm, The Parker, Floor: Second Floor, Lorica Room

Abstract

Modeling disciplinary practices is an instructional strategy used to apprentice students into discipline-specific ways of reasoning. However, this modeling often consists of individual teachers modeling their thought processes out loud as they engage in a task. In this study, a group of “experts,” teachers and researchers in this case, modeled a discussion of a literary text for students, who then followed suit with their own discussion of a different literary text. Our research examines the knowledge and practices employed by the participants in each discussion and explores the similarities and differences between the two to understand what practices students may have noticed and emulated from the instructional modeling.
