(Re)Imagining the Possibilities: Exploring the Dreams, Hopes, and Economic Opportunities of Court-Involved Young People

Mon, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Eighth Floor, Manhattan Ballroom

Abstract

In answer this year’s theme around “What is and should be the relationship between “publicness,” educational opportunity, place, and democracy?” this participatory ethnographic study engages with multimodal literacy practices of young people at an alternative-to-detention program. The study first engages with the ways young people share their dreams for the future and ways they explore and pursue their educational and career goals. By illustrating diverse ways young people reflect and dream of contributing to their community/(ies), this paper aims to spark conversations around ways educators could invite young people to contribute to ideas around self and community.
