Systematically Excluding Asian Americans in K–12 and Higher Education Research: A Qualitative Meta-Analysis

Sat, April 14, 4:05 to 5:35pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

Building on Shaun R. Harper’s (2012) work, the author conducted an extensive review of 151 peer-reviewed academic articles in six leading K-12 and higher education journals. Findings revealed that researchers systematically stereotyped Asian Americans. Publications rarely acknowledged that Asian Americans have never benefitted from hierarchies of power. Findings also suggested that an overwhelmingly large majority of researchers aggregated Asian American data, thus assuming broadly that all Asian Americans are the same, which often led to equating Asian Americans to Whites, and pitting them to Blacks and Latinos (Natives and Pacific Islanders were often excluded in the literature). Findings also suggested that researchers complicated Asian American data through counter-narratives of Southeast Asian American stories.
