This study is framed—from the questions of inquiry to the research approaches to the conceptual framework—with the goal of contributing to nascent and emergent understandings regarding the implementation, efficacy, and influence of single-sex public academic classrooms from students’ perspectives. Because our study centers student experience and explores that experience in multiple, multi-textured ways, this study is poised to contribute deeply and meaningfully to what we currently know about what it is like for students to be in all-girls or all-boys academic classrooms. This study provides a lens for understanding single-sex environments that is underrepresented in scholarship to date—naturalistic student involvement in generating understandings of a more full picture of the phenomenon of public single-sex academic environments in the U.S.
