Studying the Roles of the Home and Classroom Environments in Bilingual Hispanic Students' Educational Pathway

Tue, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Metropolitan West Room

Abstract

This study examines the pathway and effect of home and classroom learning environments on bilingual Hispanic students’ learning attitudes and willingness to attend college. A total of 503 Hispanic children from third through fifth grades in bilingual classrooms were recruited for this study. A hypothetical model was constructed and multiple pathways of the model were tested using structural equation modeling in order to examine the impact of the home and classroom environments on students’ educational attitudes. The results yielded the best fit model pathway with an acceptable lower value of 2 (19.02). These results stress the need for connecting across environments (e.g., home and classroom) in order to maximize bilingual Hispanic students’ learning attitudes and willingness to attend college.
