Model fit indices are paramount to applications of structural equation modeling (SEM). One commonly suggested criteria for two incremental fit indices, namely, Tucker-Lewis index (TLI) and comparative fit index (CFI), to be greater than .90 or .95 for a proposed model. However, as Kenny (2005) pointed out, evaluation of incremental fit indices may not make sense depending on the fit of the base model. In this paper we will develop some guidelines for the use of TLI and CFI in practice, by deriving their relations to the fit of the base model, as well as by simulation studies.
