Abstract

In this study, we recruited 14 sixth graders to play a 3D mathematic game, Earthquake Rebuild, twice a week for six weeks. We screen captured the participants’ gameplay and recorded their facial expressions, behaviors, and speech during gaming. Seventy videos were coded and analyzed in the preliminary round of analysis. Through an exploration of the quantitative learner behaviors data and the qualitative themes generated from coding, we identified some patterns of learners’ use of scaffolding from preliminary analyses. We also found a significant correlation between the different types of scaffolding and learner’s learning engagement behaviors. More findings will be reported and discussed as we complete later steps of data analyses using sequential pattern mining and analysis on qualitative observations.
