The Impact of School Accountability Grades on Student Migration: An Intersection of Accountability and School Choice

Abstract

States have become increasingly reliant on school-level accountability systems to distinguish the quality of schools. Most of these systems utilize a letter grade format to assist with public interpretation. This study uses a regression discontinuity design to examine the impact of school accountability grades on student mobility. Using the accountability system in the State of Georgia, results indicate significant movement related to these public signals of schools quality.
