Shute et al.’s paper entitled, Assessing and enhancing formal physics knowledge in Physics Playground, examines physics competency development using STEM learning games for engagement, assessment, and support of learning. They identify effective features of such games, and how and why they work to promote STEM interest and learning. ECD and stealth assessment are used for crafting valid, engaging, and real time game-based assessments and dynamically linking those assessments to in-game learning supports—i.e., an adaptive algorithm, ongoing feedback, worked examples, explanations, and learning videos. The paper discusses results from testing the various learning supports and adaptivity on player engagement and the acquisition of formal physics concepts.
