Locating Nowhere: The Longitude and Latitude of Clinical Supervisors Across Female-Dominated Professions

Mon, April 16, 4:05 to 5:35pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

Clinical supervisors are often cited as the most crucial factor in professional development, yet are virtually invisible actors in their organizations. A population of almost all women, the combination gender and close proximity to the daily actions of children and others who are in need of care, render them the most marginalized, voiceless, and powerless actors in both higher education and the systems of care in which they work. Drawing from the literature from several professions, this theoretical study focuses on two ideas: 1) the ways in which clinical educators’ work is rendered invisible and unvalued by the higher education and community institutions, and 2) the ways in which the participating organizations’ actions serve to counter ideals they purportedly support.
