With the 2015 Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the federal government liberated states from implementing teacher evaluation systems as based on growth or value-added models (VAMs). Accordingly, some states have curbed if/how they are using VAMs and other measures; yet, in other states, VAMs are still playing substantive roles in high-stakes, teacher accountability efforts. What is happening state-by-state, however, is still largely unknown. Hence, in this study researchers surveyed state department of education personnel from every state and the District of Colombia to collect detailed descriptive information about their states’ new teacher evaluation systems. As such, researchers showcase what each state has implemented in terms of VAMs, other evaluation measures, consequences, and how this has changed, by state, post-ESSA.
