Research Synthesis on English Language Learners' Critical Consciousness and Identities

Sun, April 15, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Eighth Floor, Manhattan Ballroom

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss current research focusing on critical practice for middle grade English language learners’ (ELLs) language and literacy learning. The data were drawn from an extensive literature review and the authors’ qualitative case studies in diverse classrooms. It aims to provide middle grade educators with implications and suggestions on how to develop ELLs’ identities and critical consciousness through critical practice in the classroom. The authors’ discussion on the research synthesis will provide insights on how middle grade educators can respond to social and political issues that ELLs encounter in the mainstream context and support the students’ identities as active agents, not as marginalized passive learners.
