Abstract

At a time when “fake news”, “political correctness”, and “tweets” have become part of the national discourse and the effects of the internet, distrust of science, and the “testification” of public education may be part of a cultural shift which values superficiality over depth, we believe that exploring the idea of profound learning and the qualities of the profound learner are particularly important. The purpose of this paper is to explore those concepts and to begin to identify means for preparing people for deep, lifelong learning.
