This integrative review provides an archaeological analysis (Foucault, 1972; Scheurich, 1994) of how the concept of social justice has been taken up within the literature on social justice leadership preparation. To begin, a framework is woven together by plugging in (Jackson & Mazzei, 2013) to brief ideological summaries of five central theorists that are historically pivotal to the foundations of the concept of social justice – St Thomas Aquinas, Luigi Taparelli D’Azeglio, John Rawls, Friedrich Hayek and Nancy Fraser. The presentation of these perspectives connects the past with the synthesis of the literature that follows. This paper answers the AERA call for research that provides our representative fields with spaces for critical introspection and the discovery of possible new educational/research trajectories.
