In this paper we discuss effective strategies for integrating digital media into early learning activities through findings from three randomized controlled trial studies conducted over 9 years as part of the summative evaluation of Ready To Learn. Digital games and media have been championed and challenged as the future of children’s learning. As the conversation shifts from whether digital media can impact learning to the conditions under which it is possible to do so, developers, educators, and researchers are focusing on how to support and enhance children’s experience with digital media. We advance this line of inquiry by describing three different efforts to test a model of media engagement emphasizing mediation as a core component.
