Shifting Practices and Discourses in STEM Education Through Youth Participatory Action Research

Sat, April 14, 4:05 to 5:35pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

This research reports on high school youth’s perspectives on health inequities in the context of a Social Justice/STEM program. During the course of four years, the students engaged in an action research project, which deployed a photovoice methodology, seeking to disrupt unjust health policies while reframing dominant narratives about urban health. Results illustrate how urban youth leadership raised community awareness pertaining to health-related issues by reflecting on larger sociopolitical contexts. This research holds implications for teaching, research, and policy to critically look at health issues in the school curricula and beyond.
