Agency by Design: Supporting English Language Learners' Self-Efficacy Through STEM Workshops

Sun, April 15, 2:45 to 4:15pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Seventh Floor, Columbia Room

Abstract

STEM education has been a focal point in the discourse surrounding science and mathematics education. Implementation of STEM becomes complex when considering the linguistic diversity residing in Canadian schools. Partnerships with STEM outreach programs (OPs) support English language learners (ELLs) in STEM as the pedagogies used foster dispositions in agency by design. OPs allow ELLs choice in who they engage with, multiple entry points into learning, problem-solving and the ability to play with STEM. This case study explores the experiences of a cohort of ELLs from a larger 3-year longitudinal study as they engage with a STEM outreach program during middle school. Findings showcase the importance of agency by design in supporting ELLs self-efficacy in STEM and second language acquisition.
