Mathematics is often seen as an intimidating and formal body of knowledge, rather than as a rich and dynamic subject useful for describing the world. Connecting mathematics to family and community practices can overcome this divide. In the present paper, we describe a study on the walkSTEM movement, where families go on free math walks in downtown Dallas led by trained docents. We review results of surveys given to both families and docents about the walkSTEM experience. We find that families learn to make mathematical connections and appreciate the beauty and utility of mathematics, while docents enjoy interacting with families in an informal learning setting.
