The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine strategies that are used for teaching online graduate level statistics courses. The study was conducted by interviewing six instructors and six students in online graduate-level statistics courses to understand their perspectives and experiences in teaching and learning advanced statistics. We found that instructors of are approaching the task of developing and facilitating an engaging course very seriously. They have a desire to give students active learning opportunities. However, teaching (which includes the development) an online course, particularly in a difficult and often anxiety-inducing discipline, is challenging and time consuming. Online statistics instructors may benefit from having additional time to develop and teach online courses.
