Narrative as Pedagogical Approach and Research Methodology in Science Education

Tue, April 17, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Third Floor, Room 3.04-3.05

Abstract

Narrative as a tool of instruction and narrative inquiry as a research methodology occupy different spaces in the research literature. This study documents the researchers journey to use narrative inquiry methodologies to better understand students’ learning and her own pedagogical journey as she prioritizes narrative structures as a way of knowing and understanding science. The study draws on data from teacher research of student learning in fifth grade science, university students’ analysis of “learning stories” in a science methods class, and a self study of the teachers’ efforts to incorporate narrative structures across both contexts.
