Metaphor analysis studies can yield data that allow researchers a window onto a participant’s conceptualizations on a particular target (i.e., academic writing or reading expectations). However, such methodologies can be greatly enhanced when the conceptualization data can be tied to actual learner practice. This session aims to explore the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to the triangulation of elicited metaphor (EM) data in metaphor analysis studies. One particular approach, the Retrospective Metaphor Interview (RMI), will be discussed as an exemplar procedure for ensuring a richer data set through triangulation and providing a built-in metaphor check.
