This paper seeks to revise and extend the study of the punitive discipline of Black girls in school. Conventional literature on school discipline finds the types of disciplinary sanctions used against Black girls are unfairly biased and discriminatory. I will put disciplinary sanctions in conversation with structural violence as a part of the public schooling experience for Black girls. More specifically, the continuation school serves as a site of structural violence where they are held accountable for the failures of the disparate alternative school system while negotiating interpersonal violence in their social lives. The contribution of this work is to illustrate how structural violence in school co-constructs the violence Black girls face in their interpersonal lives.
