The Relationship Between Math and Reading Achievement Among Border Public School Students

Abstract

Using a multiple regression model, we examined the impact of students’ 3rd grade math and 4th grade reading performance on their math achievement in 4th grade at school level in recent two academic years. We further examined the differences between students in border and metropolitan area regarding their 4th grade match achievement. We found that school location, students’ math performance in 3rd grade and reading performance in 4th grade were all statistically significant predictors. Texas-Mexico border schools lagged behind metropolitan schools regarding the performance level of 4th grade reading, 3rd grade and 4th grade math at school level. Our study found that border schools were in a disadvantage place of preparing students in 4th grade math.
