The Meaning and Impact of a Promise Scholarship: Perceptions From Alumnae of an Urban District

Abstract

Promise scholarships are increasingly popular among policy-makers intent on increasing educational opportunity in this era of rising tuition in the current system of higher education. Yet, in the past decade since this financial aid policy has emerged, relatively little qualitative research has been published on how these initiatives impact students. This study uses interviews with current college students who are alumnae from an urban high school district and recipients of a promise scholarship. By focusing on how college students describe the value and the impact of the scholarship we seek to highlight student voices and their perception of promise scholarship impacts.
