Effective principals can positively affect teacher quality and student outcomes at their schools, while principal turnover negatively affects teacher retention and student achievement gains. Very little work, however, examines the relationship between principal quality and principal turnover, and by extension, related effects on teacher and student outcomes. Using data from the Schools and Staffing Survey and the New York City School Survey, this paper aims to fill that gap. Using teachers’ perceptions of their principal as a measure of principal quality, findings suggest that teacher satisfaction negatively predicts principal turnover. This paper discusses the implications of these findings and presents ideas for future work to further disentangle the observed relationship.
